Our History

Refuge Temple Church is a purpose driven, five star church that intends to win the world for Christ by adressing the spiritual, social, and economical needs of the community. Since inception December 4th, 1994, with no members, over 300 have joined to assist in restoring the people by proclaiming the Good News.

Then and Now

In 1993, God revealed to Elder Waverly B. Bumbrey the need for an uniquely active and relevant ministry in the Detroit, Michigan area; a ministry that would provide a place of safety to meet the needs of the people regardless of their past or present situations. Through many thoughtful hours, fervent prayers, trails, and tribulations, the concept of Refuge Temple Church began to take form. The first service for Refuge Temple was held on December 4th 1994 with over 100 invited guest, at 3:30 pm at 15101 Livernois Street Detroit, Michigan with a plan to worship and praise God. That first service two memebers joined Min. Ricky Cranford and Ms. Letifa King.

A year later, we relocated to Grand River continuing to provide opportunities to serve in various ministries/auxiliaries to learn in Sunday school, Monday Night Pastoral Teaching and Thursday Night Evangelistic Services. Unfortunately due to the ministry different challenges Refuge Temple has moved many times from Grand River to 15101 Plymouth, to sharing a building on Tireman, to sharing a building on James Couzens, to store front building at 16911 West McNichols, to Baileys Cathedral Chapel. We purchased 4844 McClellan Street on July 12, 2003, where we praised the Lord for 7 years until we moved to 12227 Findlay Street in Detroit, Michigan on January 27, 2011.

Our Beliefs

We believe the Bible to be the inspired and only infallible written Word of God.

We believe that there is One God, eternally existent in three Persons; God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

We believe in the Blessed Hope, which is the rapture of the Church of God, which is in Christ at His return.

We believe that the only means of being cleansed from sin, is through repentance, faith in the precious Blood of Jesus Christ and being baptized in water.

We believe that regeneration by the Holy Ghost is absolutely essential for personal salvation.

We believe that the redemptive work of Christ on the Cross provides healing for the human body in answer to believing in prayer.

We believe in that the baptism in the Holy Ghost, according to Acts 2:4, is given to believers who asks for it.

We believe in the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit, by whose indwelling, the Christian is enabled to live a Holy and separated life in this present world, Amen.
